Who We Are

The Barrett family has over 100 years in teaching and playing the lovely game of golf. My father worked full time as a high school math teacher, after work he would go to the old Stardust (now Riverwalk Golf Club) and Cottonwood Golf Club in San Diego where he would open up the cash register in the morning and give private golf instruction in the afternoon. This allowed my brother, sister, and I to have golf privileges where we would play and practice seven days a week. More often than not, my mom would pull her car up to the driving range so we could hit balls into the night. To this date, my father remains the only teacher to have two of his students win the Junior World Championship in the same year.

My name is Bill Barrett played professional golf on the Asian Tour traveling to 12 countries in 3 months. I qualified for the Buick Invitational (now Farmers Insurance Open) at Torrey Pines in 1992. Wanting to set roots in my hometown and put my travel days behind me, I chose to reside in San Diego and obtain my professional status in 1981 where I have enjoyed teaching people of all ages, skill, and backgrounds for over 40 years. Throughout my 40+ years of teaching, I am fortunate enough to have taught some very high level players winning country club events, mini tours, amateur tournaments, etc.

Perhaps my most successful students have been twins, Anna and Billy Davis. I began teaching them when they were four years old. They have both worked extremely hard, practicing daily what they have learned from my instruction. They have accomplished more through high school than most professional golfers ever will. I could write 10 pages on the success they have had in their young careers and it wouldn’t give them justice; you are better off Googling them to see their numerous achievements and accolades. To highlight a couple, Billy and Anna were chosen too represent the U.S. in the 2023 Junior Ryder Cup in Rome, Italy. Six players in the country were chosen for the U.S for boys’ and girls’ teams. Individually, Billy shot 70,70 in his first PGA tour event in Cabo San Lucas at 17 years of age. Anna won the Augusta National Women’s Amateur Championship in 2022 at the age of 16.

My sister, Sharon Barrett, won the California High School Championship three years in a row starting in 1977, as well as the California State Junior and the Junior World Championship from 1978-79. In 1979 she was the San Diego Amateur Athlete of the Year. At the University of Tulsa, she compiled an amazing collegiate record, winning the first five events she entered, being named an All-American in 1980. She left college early and played 18 years on the LPGA tour winning one event. After her retirement from the LPGA Tour she taught for 13 years at private country clubs on the east and west coast.

My brother Bob was always at the golf course. Despite spending more time working on the golf carts than his actual golf game, he was always an impressive golfer. He competed in long drive competitions throughout high school and ultimately turned his focus on football. After suffering multiple injuries in football, his knowledge, passion, and experience gained from spending years at the golf course with family allowed him to rekindle his passion for golf. He shared his knowledge by coaching high school golf for 16 years.

Golf is an incredible game that anyone at any age can enjoy. It truly is the greatest game to ever be played and I am blessed that it is such a big part of my life. I look forward to passing my knowledge to my students everyday

WELCOME TO SAN DIEGO GOLF ACADEMY

I have taught at a driving range for the last 23 years. Throughout my time I have seen thousands and thousands of “lessons” given from one friend to another. A 20 handicapper helping their friend complete a shoulder turn is like me working on my mechanics car. If I tried to do it, I would just cause more harm than good. I understand there are limitations why people don’t take golf lessons and this program is designed to overcome these obstacles. This program allows you to learn the proper way to golf, on your own time, without spending a fortune.
